Ajanta - Ellora - Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar - Lonar
An extended journey through the artistic, spiritual, and natural heritage of the Deccan. This itinerary combines the UNESCO sites of Ajanta and Ellora with the historic city of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and the extraordinary geological wonder of Lonar Crater Lake. The pace remains comfortable, with each day focused on a distinct layer of the region's story.
Designed for: Cultural travellers who want depth without haste, and for foreign guests seeking a broader Deccan narrative.
Theme: The World of the Monks
A scenic drive through northern Maharashtra leads to Ajanta Caves, carved into a horseshoe-shaped cliff above the Waghora River. Dating from the 2nd century BCE to the 6th century CE, Ajanta represents one of the finest surviving traditions of ancient Buddhist art.
A guided exploration focuses on a curated selection of caves, allowing time to appreciate the murals, sculptures, and monastic spaces that reveal the spiritual and daily life of the monks who lived here.
Lunch is arranged near the site before a relaxed return to the city. Evening at leisure.
Theme: Monoliths and Empires
Ellora Caves illustrate the convergence of Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain traditions carved across a single escarpment between the 6th and 10th centuries CE. The visit centres on the Kailasa Temple and select surrounding caves.
After lunch near Ellora, the tour continues to Daulatabad Fort, a 14th-century hill fortress famed for its strategic design and layered defences. Exploration is partial and paced, with climbing optional.
Theme: The Historic Capital
A relaxed city day focused on Mughal and Deccan-era heritage. The morning visit is to the city's most iconic monument, followed by time to explore local traditions and crafts. The afternoon is kept light in preparation for the next day's longer drive.
Theme: Nature, Science, and Sacred Landscape
Lonar Crater Lake is one of the world's few meteorite-impact craters formed in basalt rock. The drive passes through rural Maharashtra before reaching the crater, where nature, geology, and mythology intersect.
The visit includes viewpoints of the crater lake and surrounding temples dating from different periods. Lunch is arranged near Lonar before the return journey.
Evening return to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
Overnight stays in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar for all 3 nights.
